To prevent distraction burglaries, use the Stop, Chain, Check routine before opening your door: keep doors locked, secure the door chain first, and always demand verifiable ID before allowing any unexpected workers, utility agents, or callers into your home. Distraction burglars often work in teams; one person occupies or distracts you while an accomplice slips inside to steal. The following core strategies are recommended by UK police and security experts to safeguard your property:
Follow the "Stop, Chain, Check" Rule Stop: Before answering, make sure your back door and other entry points are locked. Criminals operate in groups to enter unlocked properties. Chain: Always put the door chain or bar on before opening the door, and keep it on while speaking to strangers. Check: Always ask for and carefully examine official identification, even if they claim it's an emergency. Verify their identity by calling the organization directly using a number from a phone book or a recent bill—never use the phone number printed on their ID card or business card.
