Neighbourhood officers issue crime prevention advice to Southampton East residents around theft from vehicles

Good afternoon all,

We just wanted to share some crime prevention advice as we investigate an increase in reports of vehicles being broken into in the east of Southampton.

The Bitterne neighbourhood policing team are investigating these incidents, but as our enquiries progress we would like to remind you of some simple steps you can take to help protect your vehicle from criminals:

  • When leaving your vehicle, close all windows and lock your car. Test the door to ensure it is definitely locked.
  • Park your vehicle in an attended car park and look for public car parks approved by the Park Mark scheme.
  • Consider having a dash-cam fitted that records when the car is switched off, if the car gets bumped, the dash-cam will record everything and also act as a visual deterrent.
  • Items of little value, such as shopping bags and clothing, may tempt a potential thief to break into the vehicle to see whether they contain anything worth stealing. Don’t leave anything on display and take all personal possessions with you.
  • Don’t hide any valuable items. Take it with you or leave it at home.
  • Leave the glove box open if possible to show there’s nothing inside.
  • Do not store ownership documents inside the vehicle.
  •

Please report any crimes online at hampshire.police.uk or call us on 101.

In an emergency or if a crime is in progress please call 999.

We want to know what it’s like to live in your area – what issues do you face? This will help us figure out how we can work with others to make you feel safer.
